Classroom Teaching and School Management skills development 

When: Saturday, October 27, 2018, 8:00am - 5:30pm 

Eligibility: Applicants must qualify for at least one of the following categories:

• Be at least a 2nd dan instructor; part time or full time

• Be a university student studying taekwondo

• Be a school/doejahng owner and/or operator

All entries must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a professional taekwondo practitioner.

Application confirmation and last minutes correction requests are due September 28, 2018 between 9:00am EST and 5:00pm EST

The Contest will be comprised of the following:

I. Purpose

A. To provide a better learning opportunity for professional taekwondo martial artists in both classroom teaching and doejahng management 

1. Your presentation must contain a reasoning and/or purpose; help others understand why you are operating your doejahng as you do

II. Divisions (choose one or both)

A. Classroom Teaching 

1. Innovative ideas

2. Practical application 

3. Effective methods

4. Examples include, but are not limited to: poomsae, hosinsool, kyorugi, physical conditioning, basic movements, demonstration, character building, education, etc. 

5. This is your opportunity to spread your knowledge to others and help foster the taekwondo community to become better educators

B. School Management

1. Ideas to run a professional business

2. Marketing

3. Retention tools

4. Renewals and upgrades

5. Student progress monitoring system

6. Manuals for students and staff

7. Staff development ideas

8. After school program and camp 

III. Language

A. All presentations must be conducted in English

B. If the presenter is not comfortable speaking in English, a translator must accompany the speaker

1. The presenter must provide their own translator

IV. To apply, submit the following

A. Completed application form

B. Passport size photo

C. Recommendation letter from a professional taekwondo practitioner

D. Brief video overview of presentation (3 minutes or less)

E. PowerPoint presentation (15 slides or less)

F. Written document explanation of PowerPoint (10 pages or less)

G. Additional video must be in following order (10 minutes or less)

1. Intent- what are you trying to do? How are you helping the student understand? 

2. Purpose- Why are the students practicing poomsae?

3. Effect- how is it affecting the student?

4. Demonstration- please include an example demonstration of how these methods are applied. You may have a student in the video to assist you, but it is recommended that if the student is used in the video, they are to also accompany you to the live contest judging

V. Other contest guidelines

A. Submitted materials will not be returned to the presenter

1. Please keep copies of all documents

B. Stage

1. Presentations must fit 16 x 8 stage

C. All contents must be approved by the USTC organizing committee prior to the presentation

1. Everything being shown at the live judging must be pre-approved. If showcasing new material that has not been screened, the presenter is eligible for disqualification

D. Elimination

1. Elimination will take place September 30, 2018 at Black Belt World, 300 Black Belt World Dr. Knightdale, NC 27545 

2. Results will be announced through USTC website and facebook

3. Only 3-4  winners in each division (Classroom Teaching and School Management) will advance to the final live judging; 7 finalists total.

E. Final

1. Final will take place Saturday, October 27, 2018 9:00am EST – 5:00pm EST

2. Embassy Suites by Hilton Raleigh Crabtree, 4700 Creedmoor Rd. Raleigh, NC 27612

3. Presentation must not exceed 20-25 minutes 

4. Questions and Answer session will follow (10 minutes or less, must equal no more than 30 minutes total) 

5. The order of presenters will be announced through the USTC website and facebook at least two days prior to the event

F. Awards

1. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and 4th place winners in each category

2. 1st place will receive a trophy, certificate, and cash prize of $1,000

3. 2nd place will receive a trophy, certificate, and cash prize of $500

4. 3rd place will receive a trophy, certificate, and cash prize of $300

5. 4th place will receive a trophy, certificate, and cash prize of $150

G. Video recording of any kind is prohibited during the live contest

1. Photography and video disrupts the integrity of the event and is prohibited

VI. Judging

A. Five judges will preside over the contest

B.  Judging criteria

1. innovative ideas and methods to contribute to the development of taekwondo in the United States

2. All content is appropriate for taekwondo

3. Only content will be judged, not the presenter 

C. Scores and placement

1. Total combined scores after excluding highest and lowest

2. In the event of a tie, the judges will vote

D. Presenter must wear a clean doeboke or business attire and any/all assistants must wear a clean, full doeboke
